If I had to choose one watercolor color that constantly grabs my attention, Phthalo Turquoise would be near the top of the list.
Phthalo Turquoise is a vibrant blue-green that can range from bright tropical water to deep, dramatic shadows depending on how it's used. It's one of those colors that seems to glow on the page, especially when paired with darker surrounding colors.

One of my favorite things about Phthalo Turquoise is its versatility. In strong mixtures, it creates bold, eye-catching passages of color. Diluted with plenty of water, it can produce soft, luminous washes that work beautifully in skies, water, and atmospheric backgrounds.
It also mixes well with many other colors. Combining it with blues can create rich ocean tones, while mixing it with earth colors can produce muted, moody shades that feel completely different from the original bright turquoise.
While it's not a color I use in every painting, it's often the color that adds that little bit of excitement when a palette feels too predictable. Sometimes all it takes is a touch of Phthalo Turquoise to make a painting come alive.
If you've never tried it before, it's worth experimenting with. Whether you're painting water, skies, abstract backgrounds, or atmospheric landscapes, Phthalo Turquoise is a color that can bring both energy and depth to your work.
Final Thoughts
Some colors are useful. Some colors are beautiful. Phthalo Turquoise manages to be both, which is why it continues to earn a place on my palette.
